The GLR Campaign recognizes Worcester, Massachusetts, as a 2016 Pacesetter for its exemplary work in using proven and promising strategies and programs as well as for its work in addressing the health determinants of early school success.
The campaign coalition worked together to pilot and then scale a pediatric asthma program. This evidence-based, community/clinical linkage initiative utilized trained, culturally competent community health workers as a part of the clinical team to assess and address asthma triggers in the home. The success of this work led to additional funds to scale the program into a comprehensive, citywide evidence-based intervention that includes all Worcester Public Schools, Head Start and 11 additional partners.
In addition, the coalition has built on past successes to embark on a mission to combat the gap in early childhood education by adopting a formal birth through third-grade strategic framework used throughout the community as well as developing an ambitious preschool expansion plan to bring high-quality preschool education to over 1,000 children.
