Whitfield County is a key partner in the Early Education Empowerment Zone (E3Z)-North Birth to Eight Leadership Team. This partnership has created a pipeline of supports for young children and their families, including multiple access points to high-quality language and literacy services. The local GLR initiative has developed an innovative set of programs and practices through its integrated use of Learning Academies, Book Blasts, Power Lunches and Ready Rosie.
The GLR Campaign recognizes Whitfield County and its E3Z-North efforts for prioritizing vulnerable children. The programs implemented include Learning Academy, which takes place at schools and provides language-rich activities for families so children enter school ready to succeed and families focus on talking with their children. Power Lunches, which brings schools to the community by providing healthy meals to children during the summer, allows teacher candidates from Dalton State College to engage children in activities that promote language and literacy. In addition, the program addresses needs related to health, family and socio-emotional issues and has also been scaled up to serve more communities.
