Tahoe Truckee, CA
The Tahoe Truckee, CA, Grade-Level Reading Campaign is recognized as a 2014 Pacesetter for making measurable progress on student attendance outcomes. The percentage of K-3 students who were chronically absent in the district fell from 8.4% in 2012-2013 to 6.5% in 2013-2014. This represents over 100 more students who were not chronically absent. Dr. Robert Leri, the school district superintendent and school site principals are leading the community’s efforts to improve attendance in the early grades.
Strategies include a community-wide attendance awareness and parent education initiative–with a particular focus on schools with the highest levels of chronic absenteeism–to help parents understand and “own” the importance of good attendance and learn about available supports that address barriers to getting to school. At the school level, the district has implemented School Site Attendance Review teams (SARTS) to monitor and follow up on attendance issues with individual families. Schools are encouraged to implement incentives to nurture a culture and cultivate the habits of excellent attendance.
The Tahoe-Truckee GLR Campaign reaches approximately 1,470 low-income children in a school district of roughly 4,000 students. In partnership with the Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District, the Campaign regularly tracks the percent of K-3 students from low-income families who are chronically absent as a key measure of its overall impact on student outcomes. Reflecting on the community’s progress since it joined the Campaign in 2012, local GLR Lead, Laura Brown, commented, “I am constantly amazed with the high level in which our community embraces Tahoe Truckee Reads, our third grade reading initiative. It is validating to see positive results from our comprehensive, community-wide efforts.”
