Syracuse, New York
The GLR Campaign recognizes Syracuse, New York, as a 2016 Pacesetter for innovative and exemplary efforts to support parent success and address health determinants of early school success.
Syracuse is using data and technologies in creative ways to identify the community’s most vulnerable children and in turn to align initiatives across all the Campaign’s solutions areas and service sectors. The local campaign has developed exceptionally strong partnerships with its schools, government, foundations, local housing authority, libraries, public television, adult education programs, the public health department and a variety of local funders. It has used promising practices like Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, Too Small to Fail, Vroom and Green & Healthy Homes Initiative to strengthen services within each of these systems and to leverage public support. Syracuse’s achievements are evident in a community-wide understanding and commitment to the work of the campaign, the launch of an Early Childhood Alliance, new programs like those targeting children in foster care and children with incarcerated parents, supporting the family literacy program Literacy Champions, the convening of a citywide anti-poverty task force and an infusion of new funding.
Most importantly, Syracuse is reporting promising results for many important indicators of academic success for the community’s children.
