Suncoast (Manatee & Sarasota Counties), Florida
The GLR Campaign recognizes Suncoast (Manatee & Sarasota Counties), Florida, as a 2016 Pacesetter for its excellence in five of six criteria for success, scale and sustainability: supporting parent success and addressing the health determinants, driving with data, building cross-sector collaboration, prioritizing children and families in public housing, and utilizing technology for impact.
Especially noteworthy is the Suncoast Campaign’s overarching two-generation approach, the dental sealants program and its focus on public housing. The campaign utilizes Vroom as the “on-ramp” to school readiness, and has leveraged the Vroom/Mind in the Making alignment to train 332 individuals through Mind in the Making workshops. Suncoast has partnered with government, civic and philanthropic organizations to jumpstart a mobile dental sealant program for second graders, which is projected to be self-sustaining after three years. More than 1,370 children received sealants in 2015–16, with plans in place to reach children birth through 5.
To raise awareness, Suncoast is partnering with the Sarasota Herald Tribune for a “hot topics” discussion about how poverty affects children and parents. Its work with the Sarasota Housing Authority (SHA) addresses chronic absenteeism and other GLR priorities in multiple ways, including partnering with public schools to track data; engaging SHA staff in support teams for chronically absent children; providing afterschool homework clubs, summer enrichment camps and on-site quality volunteer prekindergarten (VPK); and supporting book-giveaways.
