Seminole County, Georgia
The GLR Campaign recognizes Seminole County, Georgia, as a 2016 Pacesetter for the strength of its coalition, which has allowed the community to create a sustainable movement.
In particular, the Seminole coalition has worked tirelessly to ensure a supportive parent initiative. Through the partnership and collaboration of Family Connection, Seminole County Schools and other local partners, parents can participate in a series of workshops through a Parent University. Once parents complete the program, they receive free school supplies for their children. Other activities include family game nights and family pajama parties where teachers read books so families can gain skills and become more comfortable reading at home. These events also promote the summer reading program at the library. The community also has a focus on reaching the most vulnerable children through Ferst Foundation books and a local Certified Literacy Community Program (CLCP). Family Connection set up a Reading Lab for preschoolers and kindergartners who needed assistance with reading. One-on-one tutors work with these children to help them improve their literacy skills.
In addition, the community works with expectant teens, preparing them to become parents and giving baby showers where participants receive critical supplies like diapers and blankets.
