Pittsfield, MA

Pittsfield Promise, the Pittsfield, MA, Grade Level Reading Campaign, is recognized as a 2014 Pacesetter for making measurable progress on summer learning outcomes.  In Pittsfield, 95% of children enrolled in a 2014 community-based summer learning program, St. John’s Lodge/ YMCA  and 100% of children in the 2014 school district summer program maintained or improved literacy skills.

Pittsfield’s summer learning programs are using new literacy materials designed to prevent the learning loss that affects many children during the summer. The materials include 16 binders, each with a Magic Tree House book and nonfiction companion plus a literacy curriculum.  Offered by schools, the library, the city and parks department as well as summer camps, the summer learning programs serve about 500 elementary school-age children. Pittsfield Promise also continues to use “Word of the Day” throughout the city during the summer, providing a word, definition and sample sentence for parents, caregivers and summer providers to use to build children’s vocabulary.

The Pittsfield GLR Campaign reaches approximately 2300 low-income children in a school district of roughly 6,000 students. In partnership with the Pittsfield Public Schools, the Campaign regularly tracks the percent of children from low-income families who participate in a summer reading program as a key measure of its overall impact on student outcomes. Reflecting on the community’s progress since it joined the Campaign in 2012, local GLR Lead, Kristine Hazzard, commented, “While we face significant challenges in reaching our goal of 90% of third graders reading proficiently by 2020, we are confident that with the many partnerships we have that are supporting parents in their role as their child’s first teacher, we can improve outcomes that will ensure success for Pittsfield children.”
