The GLR Campaign recognizes Phoenix (Read On Phoenix), Arizona, as a 2016 Pacesetter and for demonstrating exemplary work in all areas of success, scale and sustainability.
Read On Phoenix (ROP) has impressive scale and reach with a well-established and growing coalition of public and private agencies (80 members/40 literacy organizations/school districts). Its work has resulted in increased funding for school readiness, volunteer tutoring during/after school and summer learning. ROP used a data-driven results-based leadership process to carefully review its work to date, refresh the momentum and make midcourse adjustments in its citywide plan for added impact.
The campaign has focused like a laser beam to improve the school readiness of Phoenix’s 115,000 young children under age 5. ROP increased quality birth to 5 services by offering evidence-based parent education programs through Head Start/Early Head Start, connecting families to the Phoenix Library’s Kindergarten Bootcamp that is aligned with state standards, expanding the reach of several United Way school readiness programs and implementing the Raising A Reader eight-week summer literacy program (70% of trainings offered in Spanish). ROP has enhanced its focus on parent success and strategies to address the health determinants of school success. It also has a strong partnership with Phoenix’s Public Housing Program and has increased literacy efforts in grades K–3.
