The Paterson, NJ, Grade-Level Reading Campaign is recognized as a 2014 Pacesetter for making measurable progress on student attendance outcomes. Paterson School No. 5 reduced the number of chronically absent students by 76%, from 152 to 36 in just one year.

In collaboration with the local Campaign, Paterson School No. 5 took a careful look at attendance data and identified its chronically absent students. Among other strategies, the school matched these students with a school staff person who checked in with students daily and followed up with families.  The district has also implemented a phone system to call parents when a student is absent.

The Paterson GLR Campaign has reached approximately 37,000 low-income children since its launch.  In partnership with Paterson Public Schools, the Campaign regularly tracks the percent of K-3 students from low-income families who are chronically absent as a key measure of its overall impact on student outcomes. Reflecting on the community’s progress since it joined the Campaign in 2012, local GLR Lead, Irene Sterling, commented, “We are so excited about the progress our families are making with so many partners working together. We broke down a lot of silos that got in the way thanks to the Campaign.”
