New York City, New York
The GLR Campaign recognizes New York City, New York, as a 2016 Pacesetter for its impressive work to support parent success and address the health determinants of early school success.
The coalition oversees a strong program for dental screening and follow-up. Similarly, students participated in a health initiative to increase exercise where they logged 4 million steps. The campaign’s two-generational approach with families aims to assist parents in developing essential skills and assets to become self-sufficient while also improving academic success for children. New York City is also recognized for its strong cross-sector collaborations including business partners that support schools, strengthened partnerships between school and afterschool staff resulting in enhanced impact, and more aligned values and goals among teachers, parents, CBOs and principals. The New York City campaign’s work is also focused in a neighborhood with a high concentration of families living in public housing.
Its ReadNYC social workers work collaboratively with school staff to decrease chronic absence in six Mott Haven schools.
