Cedar Rapids, Iowa
The GLR Campaign recognizes Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as a 2016 Pacesetter for reporting population-level, measurable progress in school readiness for children from low-income families.
Cedar Rapids joined the GLR Campaign in 2015 and has launched a robust community partnership known as Reading Into Success, which covers Cedar Rapids and three additional school districts in the region. One of the key programs and partners in Cedar Rapids is the Red Ahead program (Read Every Day to Get Ahead). Red Ahead serves low-income families with children birth to age 5 in three Women, Infants and Children (WIC) clinics in the county. Families using WIC services are given the opportunity to join Red Ahead upon enrollment in WIC. In 2013, Red Ahead conducted 189 screenings using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire and referred 21 children for additional screening for possible delays. Most recently, in 2016, Red Ahead conducted 538 screenings and referred 75 children for additional screening tripling the number of children screen and referred. The data are kept in a database that serves all children and families who access the WIC program. A partnership between United Way of East Central Iowa, the lead agency for Reading Into Success, Red Ahead and Hawkeye Community Action Agency allows for capture and reporting of the data.
