Broward County, Florida
The GLR Campaign recognizes Broward County, Florida, as a 2016 Pacesetter for its impressive set of partnerships along with a robust infrastructure that can sustain success and take the work to scale.
Broward Reads coordinates and integrates a wide range of strategic interventions, partnerships and programs that span sectors, exemplifying the value of broad-based engagement and the way in which both multiple and diverse efforts can complement each other to achieve the goal. The GLR Campaign is particularly pleased to see that Broward Reads places priority on helping parents succeed as nurturers of early literacy, addressing the health determinants of early school success and assisting children who are especially vulnerable — e.g., through the Homeless Education Resource Team (HEART), which provides comprehensive services to homeless students to reduce chronic absenteeism and help these children learn and thrive.
Also notable is the vitality of Broward Reads Mobile Summer BreakSpot Program growing from seven sites providing meals in 2014 to 64 sites in 2016, with literacy services becoming a prominent component.
