Ernestine Benedict Chief Communications Officer
Ernestine Benedict is the Chief Communications Officer for the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading. In this role, Benedict serves as the lead orchestrator of the GLR Campaign’s strategic communications, including digital communications, media and public relations, brand management and promotion, publications, and events.
Benedict brings more than 20 years of experience in marketing and communications strategy across multiple industries, including nonprofit, government, arts and culture, technology, and education. Prior to joining the GLR Campaign, Benedict served as Chief of Communications for the District of Columbia Public Schools, the fastest improving school district in the Unites States. Under her tenure, Benedict established a new communications department to advance the image of the school district and spearheaded strategic communications supporting the launch of several key initiatives, including the introduction of the PARCC exam, the Empowering Males of Color Initiative and the Howard University dual-enrollment partnership.
Previously, Benedict was Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Reading Is Fundamental, the nation’s largest children’s literacy organization. Benedict was also the director of marketing at Proverb, an award-winning creative agency based in Boston, MA. She also served as interim director of marketing at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society.
Benedict began her marketing career in Silicon Valley, where she led development, sales and marketing efforts as a product manager for web-hosted business applications at Broadband Office (BBO). Prior to BBO, she was a marketing manager at Netscape Communications within the Strategic Planning, iPlanet and Netscape.com divisions.
